Pastoral Dimension

Opportunities for Leadership

A number of positions of leadership are filled by the pupils and every girl has the opportunity to exercise responsibility and leadership from an early age. In the Sixth Form the Head Girl, Deputies, Prefects, Social Committee, House Prefects and Senior Librarians are elected annually. The girls in these positions work closely with the Heads of Year and the Principal, and play a valuable part not only in daily routine but also in the planning and implementation of new projects. They form an essential link with the Junior and Middle Schools, assisting on a daily basis with administrative and pastoral duties.

All Prefects participate in team building workshops and leadership training. Younger pupils are encouraged to and have the opportunity to take responsibility for their own affairs. There are elected Junior and Middle School Councils who liase with the relevant Heads of Section to ensure that their views are considered and their recommendations are presented to the Senior Leadership Team. A Boarders' Council and Head Boarder, elected by the boarding pupils, assist the Lady Warden inplanning and running the social side of life in Drumglass House.

Personal and Social Education

A comprehensive and co-ordinated programme of personal, social and health education is delivered from Years 8-14 by Form teachers, subject teachers and external speakers. Health matters, bullying, social and moral issues, careers guidance and study skills are addressed through role play, group discussion and learning activities. For pupils in Year 8 the programme is targeted towards induction and helping them to settle into their new surroundings. An integral part of the programme is the Year 8 Residential in Cultra.

In addition to Form time the traditional "Festival" period for Years 8 and 9 gives girls the opportunity to listen to various speakers, see films and demonstrations, take part in concerts and workshops and participate in the annual Talent show. In addition to this the school offers  a counselling service in collaboration with Contact Youth. Referrals can be made by the pupil, parent or member of staff.

Home School Liaison

The pastoral dimension is underpinned by the partnership of pupils, staff and parents. There are many opportunities for formal and informal discussion regarding academic progress and for the celebration of success and participation in all areas of school life.

The Association of Parents and Teachers is a voluntary body which makes an important contribution to many social, cultural and fund-raising aspects of the life and work of the College.
