School Enhancement Programme
In January 2016, Victoria College Belfast received approval from the Minister of Education to proceed with a ground breaking new construction scheme on its main Cranmore Park Campus.
The Big Build is a once in a generation investment opportunity that will enable the College to enhance its position as a leading all girls’ grammar school. It is being financed by the Department of Education through the School Enhancement Programme and the total capital value of the scheme is almost £4 million. The scheme involves: the construction of a new multi-purpose sports hall, fitness suite and dance space; the provision of a new synthetic sports pitch and four tennis courts; the conversion of our existing gymnasium into a new suite for Art and Design; and the conversion of our two existing art classrooms into two new science laboratories.
Construction work on the Big Build started in earnest in March 2016 and the work will be complete by August 2017. Phase 1 consists of the construction of a new multi-purpose sports hall and fitness suite; Phase 2 consists of the conversion of our existing gymnasium into a new suite for Art and Design and Phase 3 consists of the conversion of our two existing art rooms into two new science laboratories. Given the need to minimise the potential for disruption to teaching and learning and the nature of the actual works themselves, it is not possible to carry out all of the construction work at the same time and so the three phases of work will have to be undertaken one after another.
In order for the construction work proposed to be carried out safely and expeditiously, with the least disruption possible to pupils, staff, neighbours, and other road users, Belfast City Council has granted permission for the creation of a new temporary construction access directly off Cranmore Park. The new temporary access is located opposite the entrance to Inchmarlo, the Preparatory Department of the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, and will be utilised by building or construction related traffic only.
