Saturday Hockey VCB

The 4 senior hockey teams travelled to Ballymena this week to play Ballymena Academy and had a very successful morning of Hockey. The 1X1 won 2-1, the 2X1As won 3-0, the 2X1Bs won 1-0 with the U15s finishing with a 0-0 draw.

Following a disappointing loss last Saturday Victoria College started the game determined to win. The start of the game was evenly matched with both teams having chances in the circle but VCB were first on the scoreboard, with Lizzy scoring from a short corner straight strike. Ballymena bounced back to score from a short corner also, narrowly slipping the ball in at the back post.

We started the second half well and dominated with our work rate and good passing. We transferred the ball well around the back and were able to attack well from breakdown play. After many chances lizzy finally slotted the ball into the net to make the final score 2-1.

The goal scorers for the 2As were Georgia Ross, Ara Mc Carten and Natasha Patterson with Anna Whylie getting ‘Man of the Match’ For the 2Bs teamOlivia Pattison scored the winning goal with Rebecca Bunn ‘Man of the Match’. The U15s were unlucky not to score with all the play in their attacking half.

U16 Camogs excel in opening fixtures

The U16 camogie team have played three matches in the Ulster championship. Opening victories against Aquinas and St Dominic's Grammar School were followed by a defeat against St. Genevieve's.

The team played very well in all three matches, with excellent defending by Keeva McAllister and Rachael McCormack keeping the opposition at bay. Cate Blayney was pivotal in midfield, ensuring copious supply for the marauding wing-forwards Rebecca Bunn and Darcey Smyth.

Ulster Hockey’s Annual Summer Camp

Ulster Hockey’s Talent and High Performance Unit is running a number of Talent Camps across Northern Ireland in July and August.

This is a scheme aimed at providing an opportunity for young outfield players to develop their skills and learn some new ones at a time when, hopefully, the weather is good. The camp will be intensive and competitive but also allow for a lot of fun and enjoyment over the week.

As well as offering this opportunity to all we are writing to specific players who have previously been in our underage Programmes to make them aware of opportunities in their area. You are one of those players.

The Camps will be led by myself as Ulster Hockey Talent Coach and those assisting will include Senior Internationals Megan Frazer, Michael Robson, Katie Mullan, Chloe Brown and Eugene Magee.

Areas covered in the camps will include goal scoring, 3D skills, hitting, elimination skills and specialist skills including aerials, reverse stick shooting and drag flicking. This is a unique opportunity to learn from highly skilled coaches.

The camps run throughout the day over three or four days, and for flexibility the option is there to attend 1, 2, 3 or 4 days.

Please note that numbers for the camp are limited and will be formulated on a first come first serve basis. If you are interested please see details below.

Coaches vs. Pupils in end of season showdown . . .

Mr Gray and the captain of the 1st X1 – Georgia Dick challenged each other for a match – it would not be too difficult to guess who won!!. If you know Mr Gray at all you will be aware of his competitive streak!!!  Mr Gray got to organising his team of coaches consisting of teaching staff who coach – Mrs Loane, Miss Stewart, Miss Du Toit, Mrs Mc Murray  and then of course the talent of our external coaches – Paddy Grimes, Matthew Bell, Katherine Welshman, Paul and then the competitive and aggressive Mc Millen twins – Ruth and Rachel. The leavers really did not have a chance from the beginning – sorry girls!!

We will leave you to guess the score – but there is no way that any pupil was going to get a goal past Miss Du Toit and Mr Gray and the Mc Millen girls were going for hat tricks. Paddy Grimes scored with a cracking strike from the top of the circle, on the last second to seal a very strong defeat for the poor leavers.

U14 Gaelic teams make encouraging start to the season

Our Lady’s & St. Patrick’s College, Knock 1-2  Victoria College Belfast 3-4

The U14 girls travelled to Our Lady’s and St. Patrick’s College, Knock for their opening fixture of 2015. The Malone Road girls had the better of the opening period. Perpetual movement kept OLSPK on the back-foot. Darcey Smyth of St. Brigid’s and County Antrim proved to be an inspirational captain, leading by example in the middle of the park. When it came time to shoot, the VCB players made more than they missed. Cate Blayney of Bredagh was in sparkling form at the point of the spear, clipping a couple of especially tidy points. Alice Kennedy and Kirsten Matthews also got in on the act. Before the break Cate Blayney finished a terrific necklace of passes to push VCB into a commanding lead.

Keeva McAllister and Bredagh’s Rachael McCormack were immense in defence, winning the aerial battles and frustrating the marauding Gilnahirk forwards. Hannah Sproule proved to be outstanding again in the centre half-back position, allowing nothing to get past her. Her fantastic kicking ability meant that her clearances often by-passed midfield and went straight to the receptive half-forwards.

Harriet Bedi played the second half in goal and her excellent stops kept VCB ahead throughout. In the end the VCB girls were deserving winners.

Squad:

Darcy Smyth (Captain), Keeva McAllister, Brianna Coyle, Rachael McCormack, Alice Kennedy, Cate Blayney, Nina Fitzpatrick, Sarah Hand, Kirsten Matthews, Catherine Minford, Harriet Bedi, Rebecca Bunn, Hannah Sproule, Maia Gormley, Hannah-Rose Glover, Anna O’Hara, Andrea Reilly and Mia Magee.

Ulster School's U14 Camogie Championship 2015

The U14 squad played their championship matches at Ballyholland GAC without their star player, Cate Blayney of Bredagh. This proved to be decisive as we were not able to effectively turn possession into scores on the board. We saw some outstanding midfield work from Sarah Hand, Darcey Smyth and Harriet Bedi. Rachael McCormack, Keeva McAllister and Hannah Sproule proved to be the bedrock of our defence

Squad: Sarah Hand (Captain), Kirsten Matthews, Rebecca Bunn, Maia Gormley, Keeva McAllister, Harriet Bedi , Rachael McCormack, Cate Blayney, Darcey Smyth, Susie Loane, Hannah Sproule,

Marcia Hannan, Ciara McParland, Sophie Boyle, Lucy Greaves, Georgia Heatherley.

VCB take part in Ulster Dance Competition

Military style dance impresses judging panel . . .

Well done to the Victoria College dance team who took part in the Ulster Dance Championships on Saturday 18th April.  The girls performed an army style routine to a mash up of Michael Jackson and Beyoncé.

The routine was executed with great enthusiasm and their performance was exemplary! Many complemented the girls on the accuracy and originality of the routine. They are a credit to the school and now have a life long love of dance.

Y8 Ulster School's Camogie Cup

The Year 8 camógs travelled to Ballyholland GAC outside Newry to play in the Year 8 Ulster Camogie Championship. Their opening fixture against St. Columban’s Kilkeel was a very tight affair with little in the way of clear scoring chances. Shannon Frazer, Katie Pallin and Jessica Moore defended admirably and fed some good passes through to the midfield where captain Zahra Lowry and Sophie Boyle of St. John’s dictated things. Player of the Match Mia Coffey impressed all observers with her penetrating running whilst Katie McCammon and Mia Birney of Bredagh threatened up front. In the end it finished scoreless. This match was followed by a local derby against Aquinas who we had beaten several weeks previously. On this occasion the Ravenhill Road girls took the honours, largely due to a magnificent solo display by Bredagh’s Anna O’Keefe.

Squad:

Zahra Lowry (Captain), Jessica Moore, Katie McCammon, Mia Birney, Sophia Mackey, Katie Pallin, Shannon Frazer, Naoise Gormley, Sophie Boyle, Sarah Bunn, Mia Coffey, Rosie Fogarty, Amy Montgomery, Ella Glover and Eva Clarke.

2015 Girls' Schools' Cup Final - Enniskillen Collegiate vs Victoria College

The VCB rugby team contested the 2015 Girls' Schools' Cup Final against Enniskillen Collegiate. The match was played at the Kingspan Stadium, Ravenhill.

Enniskillen have won the trophy five out of the last six years. All of their players play club rugby. In contrast, the VCB girls are relatively new to the game and are predominantly hockey players. The more experienced team proved too strong for the VCB girls, winning 14 -4. However, our girls had a wonderful day and met two of the Women's Irish team. Fresh from their 6 Nations trophy win the previous weekend, the girls posed for photographs with our team.

The team received excellent support from their peers who were cheering on from the stand. Thanks to all who attended.
