VCB awarded Best Ulster Girls’ School in Cross Country 2015

On Tuesday 24th February 2015, Dr O’Kane, Miss Stewart and five teams from Victoria College travelled to Mallusk for the Ulster Schools’ Cross Country Championships.  There was a mixture of excitement and nerves on the bus as we set off.  On arrival, we were met by Mrs Scott (a coach with Lagan Valley Athletics Club and mum to Rachel).  She took the Year 8 and Year 9 girls to do a pre-race warm up and stretches.  Meanwhile Dr O’Kane and Miss Stewart collected race numbers, route maps, pre-race information and organised the other teams.

The day began with good weather conditions and first up was the Mini Girls’ team.  What an exciting race this proved to be!  The VCB girls set a fast pace and as the race progressed Anna Hill and another pupil broke away from the leading pack.  This was a two way battle until the home straight where Anna surged ahead, took the lead to win the race and be crowned Ulster Champion.  Well done Anna.   Following closely behind was Annabel Magnussen who ran a gutsy race to secure another podium finish and bronze medal.  The rest of the team were placed highly and ensured that VCB Mini girls were awarded team gold and crowned Ulster Champions.  A superb effort from Anna, Annabel, Emma, Naoise and Ruby.  Rachel unfortunately could not run on the day due to illness.  Girls, this is only the beginning – keep training hard!

Next up was the Minor Girls team – Susie, Aishling, Sofia, Keeva, Abby and Beth.  The girls all ran strongly and Aisling Gray gained a place to the All Ireland Championships.  Well done Aisling and the Year 9 girls.  Unfortunately Susie had to retire in the latter stages of the race due to muscle injury.  The Minor girls were a very credible 12th place.

The Junior girls ran a very competitive race and worked well as a team to get silver medals and gain a place to the All Ireland Championships.  Fantastic running from Rebekah, Darcey, Georgia, Cate, Sarah and Rachel.

The Senior girls followed and we saw yet another fabulous performance.  The team was led home by Jane Matthews, closely followed by Georgia Dick.  The team ran strongly and were presented with  gold medals, crowned Ulster Champions and gained a place in the All Ireland Championships.  We are very proud of Jane, Georgia, Megan, Esmée and Hannah.  Unfortunately Rebecca couldn’t run on the day due to illness.

The weather was deteriorating, with the wind picking up and sleet falling.  The Intermediate girls were about to start their race – 3200m – the longest distance.  Conditions didn’t affect their performance and again the team didn’t fail to deliver.  Congratulations Amy, Caitlyn, Sarah, Robyn and Eve on your silver medals and place in the All Ireland Championships.

This proved to be a fabulous day for Victoria College.  The highlight was being crowned Best Ulster Girls’ School in Cross Country Running 2015.

We would like to thank Mrs Scott, all club coaches and parents who came along to offer support.  Girls – you were amazing.  We are so proud of your commitment, determination and performances.  You are all so talented, you are the stars of the future.

Good luck in the All Ireland Championships in Kildare on Saturday 7th March.

VCB Camógs Mark Presidential Visit with Shield Victory!

Victoria College Belfast Camogie Club was delighted to host a visit by Uachtarán Aileen Lawlor, President of the Camogie Association of Ireland. Visiting Belfast to mark the 10th anniversary of Camogie at Bredagh GAC where many of our girls play their club camogie, the President took the time to speak to many of our U14, U13 and U12 players and in particular to Zahra Lowry (pictured with Aileen Lawlor, Ms Patricia Slevin, Principal and Head Coach Ronán O’Brien) who captained our Cumann na mBunscol team that won the Antrim indoor championship and reached the final of the outdoor championship in 2014. She also congratulated the VCB girls (pictured) who were part of the U14 All-Ireland Féile winning Bredagh team of 2014. The players enjoyed having their photographs taken for The Irish News and the South Belfast News and several were interviewed for television broadcasting.

Victoria College hosted our first ever Camogie tournament to mark the Presidential visit and we won the Aileen Lawlor Shield kindly donated byThink People after defeating Aquinas 4-1 in the decider.

Victoria College Excel at Belfast District Cross Country Championships

On Tuesday 27th January, Dr O’Kane, Miss Stewart and five strong teams from Victoria College went to Ormeau Park for the Schools’ District Cross Country Championships.  As we left spirits were high and there was a buzz of excitement on the bus.  On arrival, Rachel Scott’s mother (a coach at Lagan Valley Athletics Club, for whom most of the Year 8 girls run) took the Year 8 girls to do drills/stretches and ensure that they were warmed up for their 12 o’clock start.  A big thank you to Mrs Scott.

Dr O’Kane and Miss Stewart distributed numbers, inspected course maps and familiarised the other girls with the route.  Team positions were important to secure a place at the Ulsters.  Every place would count – pressure was on!

Nerves were building up as the Mini girls (Year 8) approached the start line.  The whistle went and within a couple of hundred metres the VCB girls were leading the field.  Those positions remained until the finish line – a clean sweep for Victoria College – 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th.  Individual gold, silver and bronze medals for Anna Hill, Annabel Magnussen and Rachel Scott.  The Year 8 girls got a well deserved team gold – well done Anna, Annabel, Rachel, Emma, Naoise and Ruby.  Year 8 girls, you were amazing – stars of the future!

Next up was the Minor girls (Year 9).  It was another great race and the VCB girls were led home by Susie Loane (4th), followed closely by Aisling Gray (5th) and the rest of the team placed well and secured team gold.  Congratulations Susie, Aisling, Keeva, Abby, Sofia and Beth.

Pressure was on now for the Junior girls (Year 10).  They didn’t fail to impress.  Rebecca Warnock ran a very strong race and got individual bronze.  She was supported by Darcy Smyth (5th) and Georgia Ross (6th) to ensure yet another team gold.  It was a super team effort for Rebecca, Darcey, Georgia, Cate, Sarah and Rachael – well done girls!

Was another team gold possible?  It was now time for the Intermediate girls (Years 11/12) to run.  This was an exciting race and Caitlyn Harvey had a superb finish to claim individual Silver.  She was followed by Amy Edwards and Sarah Webb who worked hard together to claim 5th and 6th positions.  Team gold for Caitlyn, Amy, Sarah, Robyn, Eve and Tara – a fabulous run girls!

The final race of the day was the Senior girls (Years 13/14).  Unfortunately a few of our regular runners were injured but Hannah Beattie (Year 11) stepped up to ensure that we had a full team.  Jane Matthews (4th) ran a very strong race, narrowly missing an individual bronze.  She was followed closely by Georgia Dick and the rest of the girls ran well.  A team silver for Jane, Georgia, Esmée, Rebecca and Hannah – superb running girls.

It was an amazing day out.  Every girl got a medal and gained entry to the Ulster Championships – what an achievement!  Support from parents and club coaches was superb and we all had fun!

We wish the girls good luck for the Ulster Championships at Mallusk on Wednesday 11th February.

Y8 Camogie Blitz

Three teams from Victoria College Belfast attended the recent Year 8 schools’ camogie development blitz held at Queen’s. Most schools raised one team, a few raised two but only VCB brought such a big squad – 34 players in total. Despite most of the girls being new to the sport, the twice weekly training sessions paid off and they again justified their ranking as one of the top camogie schools in the Greater Belfast area. The A team included several of the Victoria College Prep team who won the Belfast Indoor Camogie Champiobship in 2014 and also reached the Outdoor Final. They recorded impressive victories over St. Killian’s (8-2), St. Mary’s Limavady (6-2), St. Joseph’s Coleraine (5-2) and St. Colm’s Draperstown (3-2). They drew with St. Joseph’s Crossmaglen and only lost one fixture – to St. Patrick’s Dungannon. Charlotte Houston scored an impressive eleven goals whilst Sophie Boyle of St. John’s (6), County Antrim player Shannon Frazer (5) and Zahra Lowry (3) were also prolific. The B and C teams played six matches each against schools from across the eastern half of the province, winning roughly half of their matches. Well done to all involved.
